One More New Mall: Carrefour

The newest and biggest mall has landed in Yogya. The name: Carrefour. Open at March 5, 2006, it attracted so many people to come and to buy at a big amount. Shop till they drop!

More and more the people of Yogya will consum more before. The era of capitalism that it's charm defeat the unique charism of Sultan Palace and the popular street: Malioboro.

Christmas in Yogya

Yogyakarta is multiculture society. Talking about the culture, we also discuss the religion and the ceremony.

December 24 is the time for Catholic to celebrate their Christmas. The Christmas Tree is appeared on some shopping mall and, of course, houses.

It's the time to be around with the family. Anyway, some people also think about the present. And yes, the shopping malls are very happy to serve their want. Hmmmm, a little bit "commercialized" X'mas, right?

Somewhat, neat the churches so many police keep an eye for avoiding the threat from bomber or something not really nice behavior.

A lot of "parking lot"

The number of shop, mall and restaurant is increasing. Especially, in Malioboro street and its surrounding. It's a good condition. Yet, Yogya face an old problem that's always occurred. The need for an adequate parking lot.

The main problem lay on the use of street and the sidewalk as a parking lot. The street is occupaid by numerous motorcycle and car. The result is traffic jam. Thus, the people cannot walk easily on the sidewalk that suddenly become parking lot.

Then, the worst thing is that the local government choose to provide the wide area for parking by eliminating some city park, such a city park in gondomanan Street, near the Central Post Office in Malioboro.

The best way to reduce it: using the public transportation rather than private one. So, we do not need to use the parking lot anymore.

A week ago all the citizen of Yogya can enjoy the softlaunch of the newest mall. Named Yogya Saphir Mall. Only the 1st floor is opened for public. Yet, so many people come to this new building.

Despite the protest from the neighbourhood society, the mall is in the fullspeed for finishing its building. The disagree party think that the new big mall will give negative impact both on the environment and social aspect.

The prediction is really happened. On the first day, the mall created terrible traffic jam. Anyway, the business is continue on. Walking inside the mall, I found the advertising "Space for Sale".

When we walk in the street, we can see some of food seller. Talking about the taste, all of these food are delicious.

Yet, the most unique thing is that all of the seller move from one place to other place. Their tools are "portable and movable".

For attracting more buyers, some of them promote their food using their own voice. "Sate, sate, sate...." for sate (chicken barbeque), or "Gudeg, gudeg.. gudeg Yogya..." for gudeg (sweet vegetables from Jackfruit).

Next Big Mall in Yogya

Everybody loves the mall. Bigger the mall, bigger the entertainment, the facilities and the business. The place to meet, to eat, to get in business and to walk around.

Yet, too many malls will lead negative competition between the malls itself. Moreover, the citizen will become more consumtive than before. No more space for natural public space.

Despite the negative reasons, a huge mass of people will rush in with enthusiasm to visit the "Next Big Mall" - will be opened in the end of this year.

The motto is "Buy till You Drop!", no matter whether you need the stuff or not. No matter what is your background so far as you can buy something.

Most of Yogyakarta citizen believe to God or/and tradition. Therefore, when people dies there are so many procession to bury them. To deliver the death to the "life after this life".

The procession is depend on their background whether they are Moslem, Catholic, Protestan, Budhism or Hinduism. At least, we can see that the tomb is clearly different.

Yet, no matter what is the background, all people from different background is attending the burial of their friend or family. To say "goodbye" for the last time.

Yogya - the Resik City

Everyday, all of the citizen dump their trash to the their trash bin. Then the trash is moved to the temporary place before it goes to the final processing place.

We rely on the "dirt-poor worker" that giving their hands to clean this town. Yet, nobody seems to give respect to them. Nobody think for their healthy while they do their "dirty" job.

We only think that "we pay for the service and get our own house clean". Without them we will find out that the words "Yogya is the Resik (clean) City!" is only an empty slogan.

Fasting for Moslem

Start from this week, Moslem people begin 30-day fast. We can notice that only few restaurant and food corner remain open in the noon. The purpose is to respect the fasting people.

Then, most of the offices have changed their service hours. Few hour less than usual time. The activities comes at the peak in the evening. Near the time when the fasting people start to have dinner.

The rhythm of life is slowing down in Indonesia, especially in Yogya. The midday is the most quiet time recently. The peacefull days.

Fireworks: burn the money

Near Ramadhan, the celebration day of Moslem people, some children buy the fireworks for fun. Despite the increasing of the fuel, those children do not realize that they actually burn money.

Yet, their parents do not teach them to use their money wisely. If the children ask the money for fancy fireworks, they still give it.

Moreover, the fireworks comes with a big risk. The low quality one sometime give an accident. The accident is oftenly occured. Yet, the fireworks still give colour to the dark plain sky in the evening.

Opinion on the traffic in Yogya

Below is the opinion from "seseorang dari Singapura" - somebody from Singapore, share about how's the traffic condition in Yogya.

"Well when I first arrived in jogja, I noticed that there were many motorcycles on the streets, more than cars in fact. The motorcycle
engines were so loud that at times it seemed I couldn't hear myself think.

Crossing the roads was also a 'dangerous' experience for me, as no one seemed to use the zebra-crossing. I asked myself if this reflected a self-centred attitude on the part of people here since they do not pay attention to pedestrians? I thought about this for a while, and I concluded that this could not be so.

After two months in Jogja, I know for a fact that people here are not unkind or selfish by nature. Then what is it? Maybe the rules of enforcement are not strong enough, therefore most people do not follow the traffic rules. That may be so, but then I spied a police kiosk just by the side of the road before Jogja Plaza Hotel. Surely if enforcement of traffic rules was purposeful and intentional, it would have been carried out?

This puzzle of mine was explained a little when I observed the streets as Indonesians crossed the road skillfully amidst the zig-zagging
motorcycles weaving between them. Then I knew, or thought I knew. There seemed to be a logic to the way things were done and how traffic flowed without mishap despite the seeming danger.

A friend commented to me that though the streets seem chaotic, there have not been many cases of accidents in jogya (don't know how true is this). If this is true, it perhaps then is an illustration of 'organized chaos', and the fact that there is more than one way to do things. Come to think of it, I hardly notice the noise as I walk along the streets now. It's amazing how much you can tell from just crossing a road, isn't it?
Or maybe I am just inferring too much.

Traditional house in Yogya usually have the lamp using kerosene. It's cheap and give adequate light along the night. The lamp called as 'sentir' is the part of the culture.

I did'n promote this for your house as the replacement of the eletric lamp. Do you hear about oil and eletric plantation problem in Indonesia?

It's just an interesting traditional lamp. A nice decoration.

The goverment announced that in Oct. 1 they will increase the oil price. The pros and contras is appearing.

Nevertheless, we can see a lot of people come to the gas station. Queue in line. A long line. It is disturbing because what they do will give negative effect.

The gas will actually be empty. That's mean they fullfill their own prophecy. The unavailable gasoline anywhere.

When the gasoline is empty, should we leave our vehicle in our house and start the public transportation?
